Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
Airport—Wide Communications Master Plan
Hurst Technologies prepared a Communications Master Plan establishing technology goals and a schedule of technology projects to accommodate the airport’s rapid growth and to satisfy the increasing expectations among travelers and tenants for convenient information and communications systems and services. The plan addresses identified system deficiencies and limitations; defines a path toward optimum systems integration for efficient operations and maintenance and improved systems reliability; and includes:
- Documentation of the status of existing systems and multiple infrastructures in use at the airport
- A plan for a common cabling infrastructure and network to support integrated systems; the planned network accommodates both wired and wireless voice, data, video, and process signals
- Recommendations for improvement projects for 41 systems
- Technical, spatial, and staffing requirements for recommended improvements
- A technology staff organizational model for central management and control of technology
- A financial model for evaluating costs and optimizing benefits of recommended projects
- Funding options and return—on—investment projections for recommended improvements including proposed Shared Tenant Services and revenue—producing systems
- A cost—effective implementation schedule for recommended projects
Security and Access Control System Evaluation
Hurst prepared an Engineering Evaluation of the airport’s Security and Access Control System for use in contractual arbitration.
Cable Management System Project Scope
Hurst defined design criteria and prepared a Project Scope of Work for a much—needed Cable Management System to facilitate infrastructure and network management and maintenance, to improve systems reliability, and to keep infrastructure documentation up—to—date.
Guidance on Wireless Service Provider Agreements
For the Communications Master Plan, Hurst evaluated wireless implementation to support the traveling public assessing the infrastructure required to support wireless networking and service providers and the revenue potential for such an installation. Hurst has completed research on a number of wireless service providers and equipment vendors, and has current knowledge of their capabilities and status. We briefed Airport Technology and Business Managers on the rapid evolution of wireless technologies and associated pitfalls, and developed technical criteria for agreements with wireless service providers.
